Introduction

Do you feel out of shape?  Would you like to lose a few pounds?  When you go to the beach do you leave your shirt on?  Do you become winded climbing the stairs to your second story apartment?  Does your mom help you bring in the groceries, instead of you helping her? If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions and would like to make a change but just don't know when, Now is W.H.E.N.

This WebQuest will surface information pertaining to lifelong wellness which includes health monitoring strategies, personalized exercise programs, and the essential nutritional components of a well-balanced diet.


The Task

In order to understand how to properly monitor ones own health, create a personalized exercise program, and adopt diet that is well-balanced, you will be given links to several websites that will guide you to the information necessary to complete your project.  You will be expected to complete the following:

bulletCalculate your own BMI (Body Mass Index).
bulletWrite a one-page summary explaining what components are used in a BMI calculation and how it relates to your overall health and wellness.
bulletConstruct a month long personalized exercise program.  Consisting of the emphasis of the workout (i.e. arms, back, chest, legs, etc) names of the specific exercises, and the number of sets and repetitions to be completed.  Duration and intensity of cardiovascular components should also be documented if applicable.
bulletDesign a well-balanced menu for one day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) that includes the portion size of the meal and caloric value of each food item.
bulletWrite a conclusive summary (at least two pages) of how calculating your own BMI, constructing a personalized exercise program, and adopting a well balanced diet can improve your life.

In order to accomplish the task, you will be expected to research BMI, personalized exercise programs, and the essential components of a well balanced diet by investigating the website links listed below each category.

Steps for Completing the BMI Calculation and Summary

Step 1    Research and explore various BMI calculation methods from the website links listed below.

 

Step 2    Calculate your own BMI (Body Mass Index) by imputing your personal information on one of

             the given websites.

 

Step 3    Write a one-page summary explaining what components are used in a BMI calculation and how it

             relates to your overall health and wellness.

Steps for Completing the One-Month Personalized Exercise Program

Step 1    Research and explore various personalized exercise programs from the website links listed below.

Step 2    State workout parameters (3 days a week for 60 minutes a day), dates, and times.

Step 3    State emphases of the workout (i.e. arms, back, chest, legs, etc) for each specific date.

Step 4    Name of the specific exercises and the number of sets and repetitions to be completed. 

Step 5    Duration and intensity of cardiovascular components should also be documented if applicable.

Steps for Completing the Conclusive Summary

Step 1    Gather and organize the information collected during this WebQuest assignment.

Step 2    Write a conclusive summary (at least two pages) of how calculating your own BMI, constructing a

             personalized exercise program, and adopting a well balanced diet can improve your life.

Conclusion

Now you know how to get in shape and lose a few pounds.  Next time you go to the beach you will show off your body instead of hiding it.  Now that you have completed this WebQuest it is time to put all the information you obtained and put it in to use. But when you ask. . . Now is W.H.E.N. (Wellness, Health, Exercise, and Nutrition).
